    CAREER IN DAIRY FARMING

Dairy farming includes breeding and care of milch cows and high yielding cattle, procuring milk and processing of milk into a variety of dairy products. The production process requires engineers for the maintenance of processing plants and dairy technologists for overseeing the processing of milk products. Breeding and care of cattle is generally the work of Veterinary Scientists. Dairy technologists work in procuring milk from rural based small dairy farmers or as supervisors in large dairies, monitoring the procurement and collection process. Marketing of the dairy products is handled by marketing and sales professionals.

Poultry Farming encompasses the breeding and rearing of chicks, feed formulation, care of chicks for prevention and control of disease and overall management of the farm including finance and marketing functions. It is a highly specialized field of work where experience and knowledge have a lot to contribute to success. Procurement of good bread of chick (from breeders) with the correct assessed laying or weight gain capacity to formulating nutritional feed for the chicks, keeping the farm clean and free of disease and infection, prophylactic administration of vaccinations and monitoring the breeding temperature in the farm all require good training and intense involvement. Experienced poultry farmers experiment on light and warmth management in layer farms, artificial insemination, feed substitutes and additives as well as on feed formulations. Like dairy products marketing of poultry products has to be efficiently managed. Poultry farmers have to manage the storage of their products till these reach the market.

    Study/Training

B.Tech. Dairy Technology or B.Sc in Dairy Technology can be pursued after having studied +2 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths. These are 4 year courses. Admission to these courses is made through an All India Entrance examination conducted for selection to courses in Veterinary sciences, Dairy Technology and Agriculture sciences. (Refer to tables in the chapter on Veterinary science for Courses). The study of dairy technology incorporates subjects dealing with dairy engineering as applied to production processes, dairy chemistry which deals with the composition of the product, dairy bacteriology dealing with research and biotechnological applications and quality control with testing procedures. The course includes inputs into management of dairy plants and processing industries including financial management. Education in poultry farming is still at a nascent stage. With the establishment of the Institute of Poultry Farming at Pune, specialized training in Poultry Farming is available now to students after Class X, XII or graduation.
